Mako

Two fly fisherman standing in a flood tide
Documentary

Conway Bowman has built a life chasing one of the ocean’s most inspiring, curious and menacing fish: the mako shark. His journey started with a father who believed in freedom over boundaries, shaping Conway into the fearless angler and independent thinker he became. He navigates life’s balance as a husband, father and oddball fly guide. "MAKO" explores adventure, family, and the lasting power of a parent’s influence.

A Story Worth Chasing

From the moment our team learned about Conway we recognized he was a character that needed a spotlight. After discovery calls, and a quick visit in the offseason, our team decided to fundraise and produce a film about this man, his unique pursuit and his life’s story.

Two people wearing camouflage jackets and waders standing back-to-back in shallow water, one holding a fishing rod and the other a camouflaged rifle.

Balancing Danger and Intimacy

There were a unique set of challenges in creating this film. First and foremost was story, we had to balance the excitement, danger, and exhilaration of fly fishing for Mako sharks with a soft sentimental narrative of Conways fathers influence on him from childhood and how this impressed upon him as a father.

The sharks were another story, menacing, unpredictable, and hungry. We employed specialty cameras and lenses to safely capture free swimming mako sharks, and high speed to showcase the beauty of a 300lb fish leaping 20’ in the air. All of which folded in to a single narrative.
